Marriage education for shared life

Sometimes the problem isn’t a lack of love. It’s too much load.

The Marriage Capacity Institute helps husbands and wives understand what is happening across their whole marriage, strengthen their capacity to carry shared life together, and make more room for connection, affection and joy.

For couples preparing for marriage or parenthood, strengthening shared life, carrying serious strain, or working toward reconciliation.

Shared life

When load rises faster than capacity, even a strong marriage can begin to strain.

Before drawing conclusions about the marriage, look carefully at the conditions under which it is trying to function.

The Structural Capacity Framework

Every marriage is a complex, changing system.

Marriage includes two people, their shared relationship, history, commitments, roles, injuries, strengths, children, work, health, money, family and community. A change in one part can affect many others.

SCF draws on more than 120 developed principles. They are not a checklist. The work is to understand this marriage, determine which principles apply, find what is keeping it from improving, and decide what needs attention first.

SeeUnderstand the whole marriage and the conditions acting on it.
PrioritizeFind what is presently holding back improvement.
RepairAddress damage to the marriage and the supports around it.
AdaptObserve what changes and decide what the marriage needs next.

Present load is above available capacity

In this illustration, present demands are higher than the capacity and support available. Changing any one condition changes the picture.

This is an illustration, not a result about your marriage. SCF does not reduce a marriage to three numbers.

A marriage-centered approach

Not every marriage needs the same kind of work.

The Institute does not assume that every strain begins inside the psychology of either spouse or that more intensive relationship work is always the right next step.

Marriage education and professional care can be valuable, but the same kind of work is not right for every marriage or every season. SCF asks what the whole marriage is carrying, what has been damaged, what is keeping things from getting better, and what work the marriage is ready to undertake. Work that is poorly timed or poorly matched can add load rather than reduce it.

How the work proceeds

  1. Understand the marriage.Build a clear picture of its history, conditions, strengths, injuries, supports and present pressures.
  2. Decide what matters most now.Identify what is keeping improvement from taking hold.
  3. Work in a responsible order.Reduce avoidable load, repair damage, strengthen support and protect the connection between husband and wife.
  4. Review and adapt.Observe what changed, what did not change and what the marriage needs next.

Our standard for responsible practice

Light • Safe • True™

Light • Safe • True™ governs how we teach, make claims, design resources and work with couples. We do not turn every struggle into a diagnosis, promise outcomes we cannot guarantee or press couples into work their marriage cannot presently carry.

L

Light makes the whole marriage visible.

See the people, history, conditions, pressures, supports, injuries and strengths without adding needless blame or pressure.

What needs to be seen?
S

Safe respects people and present capacity.

Protect dignity, privacy, choice and connection. Do not ask a marriage to carry work it cannot presently sustain.

What can this marriage carry now?
T

True stays grounded in reality.

Distinguish evidence from inference, possibility from prediction, and present strain from permanent truth.

What do we actually know?
